In John’s Gospel, the raising of Lazarus from the dead is a turning point for Jesus. In a sense, the Passion begins here. From now on, the theme of death as a source of life will dominate John’s Gospel. The great deed that Jesus did in raising Lazarus from the dead, is also setting into motion the chain of events that would lead to his death. And Jesus could see it coming. He knew that it was just a matter of time before he was going to die.
Jesus did everything he could to teach out to all people, the rich and the poor. Yet opposition to what he was doing was growing stronger and getting personal. There were so many obstacles put in his path. Most people would have given up and just walked away, but Jesus didn’t give up or walk away. He would accept his suffering and death because he was convinced that this was the path to life for all of us.
What happens in my life when I face opposition in the course of doing what is right ? When obstacles are placed in my path, do I walk away or give up ? Like the apostles, if we stay the course, we too will see the Son of Man glorified. Hang in there ! Lent is nearly over and Easter is almost here.
St. Joseph, pray for us !
