Tomorrow is the feast of the Annunciation. This feast was placed nine months before Christmas. Symbolically as the daylight increases, we celebrate the conception of the “Light of the World”. The feast is actually called “The Annunciation of the Lord” for it celebrates the moment “the Word became flesh”. While recognizing the important and key role of Mary, it is primarily a feast of Jesus’ incarnation.
We celebrate the astonishing fact that God became a tiny baby the size of a fingernail placed in the womb of a teenage girl. His incarnation is so astonishing that today we still don’t know what to think about it or adequately describe it. Why would God do such a thing ? The only adequate response is: “God is love”.
He became man because He is love. He does the unimaginable because He is love. He let himself be crucified and put to death for our salvation because He is love. He gives us his Body and Blood in the Eucharist because He is love. How do I love Him in return ?
Something to meditate on and pray about for the remainder of Lent !
