Sometimes it’s hard to understand what Jesus is talking about. For example, does he really mean that a Christian is supposed to “hate “ his life in the world? Scholars explain that Jesus is using this vivid language to make an important point. He is talking about letting go of one’s way of living so that we can experience a fuller, richer kind of life.
It’s not that a Christian doesn’t love his life. But rather that followers of Jesus do not hold on tightly to life with a selfishness for themselves. They do not give in to the instinct to make themselves the center of the universe. That’s not the way Jesus lived and that’s not the way Jesus died.
When I give up being self-centered, holding on tightly to my things, I open myself up to everyone and everything. When I give up trying to become the center of the universe, I gain the whole universe. Jesus never promised that life would be easy, but he did promise that it would be worth it. That’s how he lived, and that’s how he died. I need to try living that way as well !
