In today’s Gospel, John 4: 43-54, a royal official comes to Jesus and wants him to rush to Capernaum to heal his child who is dying. The official is in a panic because his child is at the point of death and Jesus is a long way away in Cana. Jesus simply tells the man “you may go; your son will live”
I can’t imagine what it would be like to be in this man’s shoes. To have my son near death and desperately doing anything to get Jesus to come and heal him, and then trusting when Jesus says calmly” your son will live”. That took tremendous faith to believe Jesus when he could not see his son. He couldn’t exactly call home to verify in those days.
I pray we all have that kind of faith: to trust Jesus with the most precious things in our lives, sight unseen. In spite of what we want Jesus to do, to trust his word and will without question.
How is this official a model for us, in trusting and acting on Jesus’ word?
