Have you noticed in the gospels that the only times we see Jesus tempted by the devil is when he is alone in prayer or doing penance. It’s when he is in prayer or fasting that he is assailed by the devil, as in today’s gospel. Jesus responded to each temptation with a truth from the Hebrew Scriptures.
We all feel weak at times especially during our 40 days of Lent. We are faced with the burdens of daily life plus all the enticements and temptations that surround us. If Jesus relied on the word of God in his temptations, how much more do we need the grace that flows from the scriptures to help us with our temptations.
My friends, Lent is the perfect time to seek the Lord in the Scriptures each and every day. There we will find the help to overcome our temptations. I especially like attending the Stations of the Cross each Friday in our parish. Reflecting on the way of the cross helps me realize the depth of his love. If he could endure the cross for my sake, I can overcome the temptation that will come my way !
