I know how I love God; imperfectly. My love is real, there is no question about that. But it is still imperfect, and there’s no question about that either. The key to loving one another is accepting imperfect love, my own love and love of others.
People can become disillusioned by imperfect love. I may feel guilty because I don’t love God perfectly. I may feel guilty because I don’t love others, even my spouse perfectly. It’s also difficult to accept imperfect love from others. If they really loved me their love would be perfect. I may also think that the only option besides imperfect love is no love. I may put up massive defenses and barriers to prevent imperfect love from reaching me. At least then I can’t be hurt.
It’s hard to admit that my love is not as pure or a good as I think it should be, but Jesus offers us an option of hope. Jesus accepts my imperfect love, because he knows it will only be perfect in the next life. Only then will we achieve perfect love. You know, Jesus is okay with that !
