Jesus said: “I gave them your Word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world.”
Until the reign of God comes, there is always going to be a certain tension between the world and the Word. Sometimes the church needs to emphasize one part of the Gospel message more than others. Sometimes we need fuller acceptance of the world that God so loved. Sometimes we need to hear the challenge and the judgement upon the world which the Word always brings. In whatever age, it’s never just one or the other.
Yet it seems to me that you can’t promote the killing of unborn babies and still profess to be a devote Catholic and receive the Body of Christ in the Eucharist! As we and the Church struggle with the tension between the world and the Word in our society today, let us be assured that Jesus is praying for us now and always. Jesus understands my struggle to live as a disciple in the world today. His words in the Gospel assure me of this love and encouragement to follow the truth and stand up for the truth !
