Happy Cinco De Mayo !!
This week’s passage about the vine and the branches is one very familiar to us. Sometimes it’s so familiar that we miss the powerful impact of that imagery. Jesus speak so graphically of the real connection between himself and his disciples. He had spoken before of how we are united, but here he says that he is the vine and we are the branches. This is an actual, close, life-giving union.
We are connected, not just when we receive communion, but at every moment of our life. I need to remember this during those times when life seems empty. Sometimes I look at the world and all It’s problems and I feel so helpless.
At those moments I should remember this Gospel about the vine and the branches and realize that it is the Lord who is acting through me. This it literally true. He is the vine, and his power and life are flowing into me and through me into whatever or whoever I touch. Being connected to the vine, I can make a difference in the world. Don’t let yourself be pruned !
St. Joseph, pray for us !
