In our Gospel today from John 15:12-17, Jesus says, “Love one another as I have loved you. No one has a greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”.  Jesus had just talked to the disciples about being a good shepherd, one who will lay down his life to protect his flock, and he asks us to do the same.
In his Pastoral Constitution “Gaudium Et Spes”, Saint Pope Paul VI wrote, “Man cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.” There is no more sincere gift than of giving of our life for others.
Let us reflect on our lives today. If we are called to truly love others as Jesus loves us, then we must be willing to lay down our life for them. How am I laying down my life for the sake of others? How am I being called to a greater depth of self-giving for those in my family, my workplace, and in my social circles? God created our hearts to be most fulfilled when we lovingly give our hearts to others.
