In our gospel today, Mark 13: 24-32, Jesus tells us that just as we can see the trees changing and know summer is coming, we can see the times changing and know Jesus is coming.
For ages, people have been trying to read the signs and predict when Jesus is coming, and they have always gotten it wrong. I often wonder why they are so preoccupied with this prediction. Are they living sinful lives and want to clean them up just in time for Jesus’ arrival, like we clean up our houses for guest coming over for the holidays? Jesus tells us we do not know the day or the hour of his return. If we are living Godly lives, we don’t have to worry when he returns. We can have his presence with us all the time, when we have a close relationship with him, and he lives in our heart.
He also warns us that the things of the earth will pass, but his word will endure forever. As we look at our lives, are we focused on the things of the world that are fleeting, or are we focused on his word, which is eternal?
