In our gospel today, Matthew 25:1-13, we hear about the ten virgins, of which five were wise and five were foolish. The wise ones did not know when the master was coming, so they were prepared and brought extra oil just in case he was delayed. The foolish ones did not, and they were locked out of the wedding feast.

People have been predicting Jesus’ return since he left the earth. I hear a lot of people saying these days that things are so bad, Jesus has to be coming soon. People have been saying that for over 2000 years now. I’ve always wondered if it is because they want to “clean up their house” right before he arrives. Why let it get messy in the first place, then we don’t have to worry.

Jesus tells his disciples to “stay awake, for you know neither the day or hour”.  Let us take this advice and keep our lives in order, so whenever he comes for us, we will be ready to enter into the eternal banquet. We know from this Gospel what can happen if we are not prepared.
