Jesus accused the scribes of not embracing the kingdom that he preached. In doing so they were preventing other people from embracing it as well. Their opposition to Jesus made other people suspicious and kept them from following him. We can also assume that their hypocrisy prevented people from seeing the true nature of God.
For our part, God wants us to be his witnesses in the world. We are to bring people to him rather than preventing people from hearing his word and feeling his love. I had a great example of that today in a graveside ceremony I performed at Riverside National Cemetery. The deceased woman wrote this for her children, her grand children and 6 great grandchildren:
“We must lead our children to Christ and encourage them to let him be the Lord of their lives. This may never make them the greatest, but it will help them endure the race that is set before them. That’s the competition that matters. Nothing is more important than to spend time building into our children the skills to do right in God’s eyes.” Ann R.
I had everyone read this at the funeral. Words to follow !!
