Who wants to be last ? How many of you enter a contest hoping to be last? Rather we always strive to win. Jesus today tells us that those who humble themselves will be exalted, so do not seek the places of honor at the banquet lest you are told to take a lower spot.

Jesus didn’t seek prestigious invitation. Yes, he ate with religious leaders, but he was just as happy to dine with outcast and tax collectors. He accepted anyone who came to him even the woman caught in adultery.

We all should be secure in our position as beloved children of God. That confidence can enable us to seek out the lowest place instead of trying for places of honor and recognition. A humble person does not have to wear a mask or false facade to look good to others. A humble person is not swayed by things such as fame, prestige, success or failure. A humble person can listen to others knowing we can all learn from each other as children of God.

St. Joseph, pray for us !
