If someone hurts us, we seem to be wired to get even. Our instinctive reaction is to want to hurt them back. So how is it even possible to love our enemies as Jesus asks us to do ?
The truth is we can’t do it on our own. It’s only possible by receiving Jesus’ grace to do as he asks. We can do it by fixing our eyes on the cross and recalling how Jesus loved even the people who hurt him. He suffered the worst death possible at the hands of the people he came to save. His example of love and mercy can inspire us to love our enemies, but that still doesn’t make it easy.
So let us today ask Jesus to give you a merciful heart. Ask him to help you forgive the person in your life that is hardest to love. If you do that, you have taken the first step. The first step is always the hardest !
