In today’s Gospel we hear the parable of the Sower and the Seed. In this story Jesus uses examples we can all relate to in our lives.
For example, we act like HARD GROUND when we hear the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to do what is right, but let it pass like it’s no big deal. Many times our lack of faith prevents us from taking advantage of the grace God gives us. In this instance we need to pray to be more spiritual.
We act like ROCKY GROUND when we follow God enthusiastically in good times, but fall away when times get rough. We need to let our spiritual roots grow deeper. The best way to do this is by reading and meditating on the Bible especially the Gospels and by frequently receiving the Eucharist and going to Confession.
The THORNY GROUND represents those of us who are slowed down in our spiritual life by anxieties, riches, or by being just too busy with many activities. When the ground of our heart is thorny, we fail to produce the fruit Christ expects. Today we live in the midst of many thorns in our society. We may have to sacrifice our own comfort and pleasure, because apart from the cross there can be no personal growth.
Today let us pray that we will not put any thorns, rocks, or hardness of heart in the way of what God wants for our lives !
St. Joseph, pray for us !
