Many try to see famous people such as athletes, movie stars or entertainers. Often this is thrill-seeking or autograph hounding. Something so we can brag to our friend. Herod likewise wanted to see Jesus. He was curious about who this man was and wanted to meet him. He was perplexed because many said Jesus was John the Baptist who Herod beheaded.

We all experience some degree of perplexity in our lives. Usually this happens when things don’t go as we thought they should. For example we pray sincerely for a sick friend to recover but they die instead. We pray for our children daily but they still turn away from the church. We don’t understand God’s plan for our country and our world, so we become perplexed. Yet we as people of faith know that Jesus hears us and will never abandoned us or our loved ones.

Herod let his perplexity keep him from seeing the truth. When he eventually did meet Jesus, Herod was not concerned with seeking the truth and so the encounter did not go well. We however have the Holy Spirit to guide us to the truth and help us choose it. This Spirit will help us find peace even in the midst of our perplexity.

St. Joseph, pray for us !
