In our gospel today, Luke 9:18-22, Jesus asks a very important question of his disciples – “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answers him ”You are the Messiah of God”. Then Jesus “rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone.”

The Jewish people of that time wanted and were expecting a Messiah to come and free them from the Romans’ oppressive rule, free Jerusalem of the Gentiles, and restore their prosperity. But Jesus was not that Messiah. He came to give up his life for all of us. Jesus didn’t want them to claim him as the Messiah, because he wasn’t going to be the one they wanted.

Let us learn from Jesus in the way he treated others. He challenged those that were exploiting and oppressing others, and he was drawn to the neediest in society, and treated them with love and mercy. Let us follow Jesus’ example and have the courage to stand up against wrong and treat those cast away by our society with the love and mercy of Jesus.
