In our gospel today, Matthew 9:35-38, Jesus sees the crowds and his heart is moved with pity for them because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. He says to his disciples, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest”.
There are many in our society that are troubled, and are wandering around lost, without a shepherd to lead them. Jesus must feel the same way about the many that are chasing the things of the world that won’t last, those that are in isolation from what is going on around them with those that are living in the margins, and especially those that have bought into the culture of death by advocating for abortion and euthanasia in our society. As in Jesus’ time, today there is an abundant harvest out there, and God needs more laborers for his harvest.
This scripture reminds me of our mission with Cursillo. To help the master harvester, invite others to a closer relationship with Jesus, so he can form them to be laborers for his harvest. Let us always be prepared when God puts us in front of his future laborers. Let us remember to make a friend, be a friend and bring them to Christ!
