Today the modern mentality is to do whatever you want as long as you don’t step on too many peoples’ toes. Jesus proposed a different mentality. He suggests we not only listen to him, but that we do the will of the father. Neither son in today’s gospel was perfect. One however came to his senses, repented of his stubbornness, and did what he was asked to do.
Neither son did as he was asked initially. One repented eventually and did what as he was told. Jesus makes his point clear – good intentions are not enough. Promises don’t count unless they are performed.
God wants to change our hearts so that we will show by our actions and by what we say, that we will follow his will for us. In return God offers us his peace, joy, friendship and a place in his heavenly kingdom. So let us accept God’s will and ask for the grace to willingly follow his will with all of our hearts.
