There are times when I feel just like James and John in today’s Gospel. There are times when I wish God would rain down fire from heaven to consume those killing babies today in our society. I feel like Jonah who wanted to see fire from heaven consume the city of Nineveh. I know it’s not right, but when we get frustrated we wish these things.

Tolerance is a much needed virtue these days. Christian love seeks the higher good for both one’s neighbor AND one’s enemies.
During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln was criticized for his tolerance toward his enemies. He responded: “Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends ?” How do I treat those who cause me problems or make trouble for me ? Do I seek their good or their harm ?

We need to pray that God will set me free from prejudice and intolerance against those I find disagreeable. We need to ask him to widen my heart to love and help me to do good, even for those who wish me harm. We need to ask him for the grace to be the face of Christ to everyone, not just my friends !

St. Joseph, pray for us !
